This lesson was really effective and engaging. The kids really enjoyed examining the bones in the pellet. Some kids thought that the lower jaw was actually one tooth/claw. To clarify this, we followed-up by getting the kid to imagine how big the rodent is, then think about whether the tooth/claw could be realistically that big. The concept behind this lesson -- how species developed and branched out -- is very interesting and I think introducing this concept early on is extremely worthwhile. However, I feel that this lesson needs more structure. Divide the lesson into two parts: first, brainstorming characteristics then making a chart for the four animals. Second, using the chart to make a cladogram.
Also I think that these four animals are a bit too similar. They don't have all that many differentiating characteristics. Choosing other animals like an insect (has six legs, has wings, has feelers...) would be better because it's easy to spot the morphological differences.
